Curt Gowdy was the son of Ruth and Edward “Jack” Gowdy. Gowdy was born in Green River, Wyoming, and moved to Cheyenne when he was six years old.

He led the state in scoring as a high school basketball player in the 1930s. He was also a sports editor for his high school newspaper when he was in high school.

Curt married Geraldine Dawkins in June 1949. When they became engaged, she was pursuing a master’s degree in radio speech at the University of Oklahoma.
