Curt Gowdy was the son of Ruth and Edward “Jack” Gowdy. Gowdy was born in Green River, Wyoming, and moved to Cheyenne when he was six years old.
He led the state in scoring as a high school basketball player in the 1930s. He was also a sports editor for his high school newspaper when he was in high school.
Curt married Geraldine Dawkins in June 1949. When they became engaged, she was pursuing a master’s degree in radio speech at the University of Oklahoma.
Jerre and Curt had three children. After a long battle with leukemia, Gowdy died at the age of 86 at his vacation home in Palm Beach, Florida.
His burial procession circled Fenway Park, and he was laid to rest in Cambridge, Massachusetts’ Mount Auburn Cemetery.
