The tragedy is still considered one of the deadliest shootings in the history of the US, as it killed 17 and injured 17 more.

A 19-year-old, Nikolas Cruz, was responsible for the incident. He was a former student of Stoneman Douglas and reportedly had a mental illness.

Jaime Guttenberg’s father, Fred Guttenberg, was devastated when he found out the news of her death. 

The next day after the incident, he was very vocal about his emotions. The father blamed the country’s gun laws for letting such an incident happen. 

“Jaime was such a special kid. All of the kids here are. What is unfathomable is Jaime took a bullet and is dead,” he said the next day. He added, “Don’t tell me there is no such thing as gun violence. It happened in Parkland.”

Since the incident, Guttenberg has become a national advocate for gun control. He is an activist talking against gun violence and has done considerable work since the mass shooting incident. 

Moreover, Fred also has a son, Jesse, who studied at the same high school as his sister. Fortunately, he wasn’t victimized because he ran from the scene and went to meet his father in a store nearby.

The trial of Nikolas Cruz is ongoing as relatives of Jaime Guttenberg and other victims continue pressuring for the death penalty. 

We are on the fifth day of the trial, and many witnesses have already taken the stand. The suspect, Nikolas Cruz, has already pled guilty to all the charges, including 17 murders and 17 attempted murders. 

The case is purely an emotional one as the family of the victims wants the death penalty. They want their children, husbands, and wives to get justice.
