Jaylee Neubaum is a convicted murderer from Mapletown. He is the killer of a teenager named John Hopkins, who died in January 2020.

Neubaum killed Hopkins by shooting him in the forehead with a 12-gauge shotgun. He was convicted of murder on May 20th, 2021.

Who Is Jaylee Neubaum From Mapleton, Iowa?

Neubaum is a resident of Onawa, a city in Iowa. He is a 19-year-old teen accused of two different crimes.

The Onawa native worked in a garage on a demolition derby car. 

The 19-year-old convicted of second-degree murder for the incident on January 31, 2020, recently had his request for a new trial dismissed by the court.

Jaylee Neubaum Was 17 When He Shot John Hopkins

Neubaum was only seventeen when he killed John Hopkins in Mapleton, Iowa.

Two were working on a car garage when an argument broke between them. During the brawl, Neubaum fatally shot Hopkins. He was eventually charged with second-degree murder.

Hopkins, 16, was shot once while he and two other boys were working on a demolition derby car. 

According to the court records, Neubaum had fired after he became angry with Hopkins, who was playing with an unloaded shotgun. He felt irritated with Neubaum, ultimately leading to an argument. 

On January 31, 2020, the Mapleton Police Department found deceased Hopkins. They discovered that while Neubaum informed Hopkins that he was going to get a loaded gun, which he ultimately pointed at Hopkins, Hopkins was pulling the trigger on an unloaded pump action shotgun.

The Neubaum’s attorney said that his client had accidentally fired the shot. Thus, he claims negligence was the cause of Hopkins’ death. 

Where Is Jaylee Neubaum Now? 

Jaylee Neubaum was sentenced to fifty years in prison. He is currently incarcerated at the Anamosa State Penitentiary.

Initially, the jury had found him guilty of first-degree murder, but they later convicted him of lesser charges. They also charged Jaylee a fee of $150,000 to the estate of Joseph Hopkins.

Typically, a second-degree charged criminal is supposed to face a minimum of 35 years imprisonment. However, Neubaum being underaged, the jury found him guilty of lesser charges.

In June 2021, Jaylee Neubaum was convicted of ten counts of sexual assault. This resulted from the assault of six girls. He still faces prosecution in Monona County for the third-degree sexual abuse case. 

Neubaum’s victims, aged from 13 to 16, made complaints that they were raped multiple times between 2019 to 2020. They described that he forced them at various locations in Mapleton, pop. 1,165. 

Meanwhile, Neubaum and his attorney have been denying the allegations. They say that the girls have fabricated the stories.

In June 2022, Neubaum was proved guilty of sexually assaulting two girls. This could leave him up to additional 30 years in prison. Similarly, he is not eligible for parole until 2042.
