Joe Kent’s Wife, Shannon Kent Died From Manbij Bombing

Shannon Mary Kent, a Senior Chief Petty Officer and Cryptologic Technician in the United States Navy, was killed in the Manbij bombing in 2019 while serving in Syria.

On January 16, 2019, Kent was a part of a party that went to a conference with regional military leaders and stopped at a nearby eatery frequented by American service members, the Palace of the Princes in Manbij, Syria. Suddenly, a man wearing a suicide vest strolled by outside and set his device off. Kent, alongside three other Americans, was killed as part of the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve.

Shannon sent Joe a text message on January 16 informing him that she would be leaving for a mission. The next instant, a fireball tore through the Palace of the Princes dining area, ripping out the establishment’s front door and searing passersby outside. Kent became the first female military member to lose her life in that deadly bombing, bringing attention to the often unnoticed place that women hold in the male-dominated and covert realm of special operations.

Furthermore, she was the first female military member of the United States to be killed by enemy fire in more than three years. Shannon’s husband, Joe Kent, left the military after her death.
