English Director Peter Brook Passed Away At 97, Death Cause And Family Details

The world has lost its legendary theatre actor Peter Brook who was proudly referred to as the greatest living theatre director.

Peter made his mark on the theater world during the past decades by defying many accepted norms. Moreover, along with directing man himself, his shows have featured some of the most renowned actors in theatre, serving excellency to both fascinated and enthralled audiences.

The sudden death of Brook, residing in France for almost all his life, shook everyone from the core of their hearts.

In 1951, Peter married Natasha Perry, who belonged to Russian ancestry. Born in London, she was an English actress and the daughter of film director Gordon Parry.

She lived with Brook for 64 years of her life until, in July 2015, she passed away from a stroke at age 84. Natasha and Peter gave birth to two brilliant children, Irina Brook and Simon Brook.

As an apple does not fall far from the tree, both the children are filmmakers. To illustrate, Irina is an acclaimed French-British theatrical director, writer, and producer who was further honored by the French Ministry of Culture in 2002 with the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.

Peter Brook Death Cause 

The actor passed away at the age of 97 on July 2, 2022, according to the AFP news agency. Furthermore, his death was confirmed by his assistant Nina Soufy.

The son of Jewish immigrants, Peter Stephen Paul Brook “Peter Brook” was born in West London in March 1935. Even with no prior experience in theater, his brilliance was rapidly recognized as he enrolled at Oxford University.

Just at the age of 20, Brook was named director of Birmingham Repertory Theatre, from where he quickly moved on to the Royal Shakespeare Company and then to the Royal Opera House.

Not only that, but Brook served as director of the Metropolitan Opera in New House. He was famously known for directing major plays such as Boheme and Salome in the late 1940s.

In one of his interviews with BBC, he expressed his opinion that post-war British theater had developed into something “old-fashioned and stereotypical” and lay within the control of a few very orthodox people who did Shakespeare in the dullest way possible. Yes, he was often controversial for his statements and choosing the next place to work from the ongoing one.

No matter the tiny bits of negative remarks, he is the one who established the Internation Centre of Theatre Research in Paris, where he went in the 1970s after abandoning English theatre.

The recipient of numerous Tony Awards, Emmy Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, the Prix Italia, and the Japanese Praemium Imperiale, among the many, Brook directed the first English version of the German writer Peter Weiss’ Marat/Sade teaming up with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
