In the 1980s, Lydia de Vega-Mercado, a Filipino athlete, was regarded as Asia’s fastest woman. She was once known as Asia’s fastest woman and died after battling cancer.

The tragic news was shared on Facebook by De Vega’s daughter, Stephanie Mercado-do Koeningswarter, on Wednesday evening. Lydia was 57.

Stephanie Mercado is the daughter of the former Asian sprint queen, Lydia de Vega. Stephanie is a well-known volleyball player born in the Philippines on July 1, 1989.

The professional volleyball player started on the Lady Spikers of De La Salle University. She signed a contract in 2018 with the Premier Volleyball League squad Petro Gazz Angels.

De Vega had three children with Paul Mercado, a fish pond business owner and former engineer at Meralco. Stephanie (Paneng) is a former collegiate volleyball player for the DLSU Lady Spikers. Her four-year-old son John Michael was killed in a car accident in February 2001.

In July 2022, Stephanie revealed that her mother had brain surgery but was still in “critical condition.” Vega was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2018. Having survived for four years after the diagnosis, she succumbed to death on August 10, 2022.

Yes, Stephanie Mercado is married. She married David Abesamis Koeningswarter in January 2020. 

Student David Abesamis Koeningswarter of De La Salle University (DLSU) fell in love with Stephanie deal Vega Mercado, astar volleyball player at DLSU.

After dating her for a while, he was prepared to ask her to become his girlfriend. However, when he asked Steph to meet him at the opposite end of the DLSU campus at noon after she had just finished four arduous hours of volleyball practice and two tedious classes, she nearly refused.

But just like in the fairy tales, love triumphed, and they have been together for more than ten years, including two years of wedding.

The famous athlete and multi-awarded sprinter Lydia de Vega and Paulo Mercado were the bride’s parents the during wedding ceremony at the Santuario de San Antonio. 

Daughter of Lydia, the statuesque bride walked down the aisle alone before meeting her parents as she lovingly made “mano” to show respect and love, which is a Filipino tradition- quickly losing favor with the younger generation.

Lydia loved her daughter, and losing her mother has deeply saddened the volleyball player. Regarding her mother, Stephanie said, “”She fought the very good fight and is now at peace.” 

Lydia was one of the most famed and brilliant Filipino athletes in history after she brought home numerous medals in the Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games, and Asian Athletics Championships. She was dubbed Asia’s fastest woman in the 80s after ruling the 100-meter dash events in the 1982 and 1986 Asian Games.
