Vanessa Peoples, who was doing laundry in the basement and had hearing loss in one ear, was not home when the cops showed up since she is partially deaf in that ear.
The social workers dialed 911 after waiting for a response because they could see one of the Peoples’ sons through a window. Police entered via a door that was not locked.

On the Tuesday before last, four years ago, Aurora police officers entered Peoples’ home after receiving a call from a social worker with the Adams County Department of Human Services who attempted to speak with Vanessa Peoples regarding a recent misdemeanor ticket for child abuse.
People had been visiting with a cousin in a nearby park a few weeks prior when one of her boys strayed from the grownups. While Peoples arrived immediately to locate the boy, a woman who lived next to the park scooped up the boy and dialed 911. People received a misdemeanor ticket from Aurora police.
Vanessa Peoples Police Brutality Settlement Didn’t Make Anything Better.
Vanessa Peoples’ family experienced some relief after receiving compensation following her violent treatment by Aurora police officers. It helped People pay for college tuition, bills, a rare out-of-town vacation, and the purchase of a car.
She still can’t get a job because of her criminal history. She and her husband lack the funds to leave her mother’s home and move into a home of their own.
And despite the compensation, she struggles with sadness and frequently regrets her decisions that day.
However, settlements don’t incur expenses for a police force or its officers. Additionally, they do not prevent police from employing excessive force. Elijah McClain passed away following a violent altercation with Aurora police two years before Peoples’ case.

Vanessa Peoples Living Life In Pain After Police Settlement
A few weeks earlier, Peoples had been in the same park with her cousin when one of her boys wandered off from the adults. While Peoples arrived immediately to locate the boy, a woman who lived next to the park scooped up the boy and dialed 911. People received a misdemeanor ticket from Aurora police.
Tuesday last week marked four years since Aurora police officers entered Peoples’ home after receiving a call from a social worker with the Adams County Department of Human Services. The latter wanted to speak with Peoples on a recent misdemeanor ticket for child abuse.
People contacted her mother, who was at a doctor’s appointment, and her husband, who was at work, to come over because she was upset that police and social workers were in her home.
Police officers were gathered around People’s home as she responded to inquiries from a social worker in a tense environment. People are scared that their children might be taken away by social workers.
