Cable was born in York into a family that identified as Conservative and belonged to the working class.

Both of his parents worked in the chocolate industry: Len, his father, was a craftsman for Rowntree’s, while Edith, his mother, packaged chocolates for Terry’s.

In 1971, he was elected as a Labour councilor to represent the Maryhill ward and served in that capacity until 1974. In 1979, he ran for the Labour Party candidacy for Hampstead but lost to Ken Livingstone, who also did not win the election for the seat.

In his second try, at the 1997 general election, Cable was successful in unseating the incumbent Conservative MP in the Twickenham constituency, Toby Jessel, and became a member of the House of Commons as a result.

Subsequently, he was successful in increasing his majority in the elections of 2001 and 2005, and he was even more successful in 2010. In 2015, he was defeated and lost his seat, but in 2017, he won it back in a special election.

After the publication of the Orange Book, Cable was one of several Liberal Democrat Members of Parliament (MPs) who oversaw the party’s transition towards economic liberalism and the adoption of a more free market approach.

Cable was one of the signatories. On January 5, 2006, in response to criticism from his frontbench team and an ITN News story that documented his drinking, Charles Kennedy announced a leadership election in which he committed to seeking re-election.

Vince did this under the circumstances that he would be allowed to continue in his position. Despite this, he handed in his resignation on January 7. Cable did not make a bid for the leadership of the party and instead lent his support to Menzies Campbell’s campaign.
