He is living his retirement life in his hometown of Tamil Nadu. He argues that the Intelligence Bureau agents who initially questioned him wanted him to level unfounded allegations against the ISRO leadership. The Central Bureau of Probe found the accusations against him unfounded in April 1996. As a result, the Kerala government’s investigation was halted on technical grounds by the Supreme Court of India.

The Supreme Court granted Narayanan a $50,000 (US$70,000) settlement in 2018. The Kerala government decided to pay him an additional 1.3 crore as an ode to his contribution to India’s space journey.

A team of Kerala police and Intelligence Bureau officials detained Narayanan on November 30, 1994, as part of an investigation into alleged espionage.

Their reasoning was based on a colleague’s videotaped admission that he and Narayanan had been paid for sending designs and documents of rocket engines to two Maldivian women, Mariam Rasheeda and Fauziyya Hassan, who were thought to be spies.

Before the 1996 Indian general election, the CBI issued a closure report in April 1996 claiming that there had been no espionage and that the suspects’ confessions had been extracted through torture. After viewing the questioning footage, the Kerala High Court previously dismissed claims of torture and criticized the CBI for not following all the leads in a similar case.

Narayanan married his wife Meena when he was accused of being a spy. His entire family was shaken by the widespread resentment directed at Nambi due to the unfounded claims that he had given rocket plans to Pakistan that were stolen from the ISRO.

Nambi and Meena are parents to their two children, who have established themselves in their respective careers. Shankar Nambi is their son who is a successful businessman in Karela. Their daughter Geetha Arunan works as a Montessori teacher in Bangalore.

He is one of India’s significant scientists who paved the path for a successful future for ISRO. His net worth is estimated to be more than $2 million as of 2022. He was one of the highly paid scientists of ISRO. He was also compensated with cash rewards several times because of the false accusations he faced in 1994.

The Keralan government was required to pay him compensation of Rs. 1 crore as ordered by the NHRC in 2001. Based on an appeal by NHRC India in September 2012, the Kerala High Court mandated that Nambi Narayanan receive compensation of Rs 10 lakh. The Kerala government settled the lawsuit Narayanan had brought against it in 2021 by agreeing to pay a sum of 1.3 crores.

A biographical movie based on Narayana’s life called Rocketry: The Nambi Effect was released on July 1, 2022. He earned some money by giving the right to make a movie about his life. The film was directed by R Madhavan and collected 30 Crores at the box office.
