Is Yuli Gurriel Playing Tonight? World Series Game 6 Lineup And Reason Why He Is Not Playing

Yuli Gurriel, who also goes by “La Pina,” did not play tonight in Game 6 of the World Series.

He could not make it to the roster following his knee injury in Game 5. According to the medical reports, the damage seemed even worse than previously anticipated, and the 38-year-old first baseman will be out of the pitch for the rest of the world series campaign. 

The Houston Astros’ chances of winning the World Series have taken a significant hit following his injury. In the last game on Thursday, the Astros had a convincing victory against the Phillies by a score of 4-1, and they were optimistic about capturing the championship.

As a result of a knee injury he sustained in Game 5, Yuli Gurriel could not partake in the next two games of the World Series. Ahead of Saturday’s Game 6, the Astros benched Gurriel and brought in rookie catcher Korey Lee as his replacement on the team’s roster.

Dusty Baker, the Astros manager, said that both Gurriel and the club did all they could to get him back on the field even though the degree of Gurriel’s knee injury remains unknown.

At that point in the World Series, Houston is in the driver’s seat with a 3-2 lead against the Phillies. Gurriel, 38, had a postseason batting average of.347, with two home runs and four runs batted in. He had a batting average of.316 during the World Series.

Unquestionably, he is one of the best hitters on the team, and losing him for the remainder of the games might not be a good sign for the Astros.

“He wasn’t crying, but he had tears in his eyes,” Houston Astros coach Baker said. “You could tell how badly he wanted to play.”

Yuli Gurriel did not recover well from an injury he sustained from Game 5 on Thursday. As a result, the Astros will be without him against the Phillies in Game 6.

Gurriel suffered a knee injury in the seventh inning of Game 5 after being caught awkwardly by the Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins during a rundown. This caused Gurriel to fall clumsily on his knee.

In the seventh inning of Thursday’s 3-2 victory, Gurriel took a knee to the head when he collided with baseman Rhys Hoskins during a rundown between third base and home plate on a grounder by Chas McCormick.

Gurriel’s outstanding streak of not striking out in any of his 48 plate appearances during this playoffs ended when he was facing Connor Brogdon in the fourth inning, which is when the injury occurred. It was the first time Gurriel had struck out during this postseason.

In his first MLB season, Gurriel helped lead the Astros to the 2017 World Series championship, making him the fifth player to have won both an Olympic Games gold medal and a World Series title. He also helped lead the club to American League (AL) pennants in 2019 and 2021.
