He graduated from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in English Literature, English Honors, with “High Distinction.” Birney got an M.A. in Theatre Arts from UCLA, where he studied acting and directing with Ralph Freud and William Melnitz.

Birney was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, according to the December 2017 edition of the Wide Wide World newsletter for Dartmouth College class of 1961 graduates.
He died on April 29, 2022, at the age of 83, at his home in Santa Monica, California.
