When Hammon was a small child, she practised her shooting skills by playing Nerf basketball at home with her father and older brother.

While attending Stevens High School, Becky played basketball and also received the title of South Dakota Miss Basketball for her exceptional performance. She was named South Dakota Player of the Year during her senior season, averaging 26 points, four rebounds, and five steals per game.

Becky Hammon’s WNBA Career

After being allowed into the WNBA, Hammon, who went undrafted during her first year, was signed with the New York Liberty on May 12, 1999. During her rookie season, she served as Teresa Weatherspoon’s backup point guard and had impressive numbers. Due to her strong play on both ends of the court, she gained popularity among Liberty supporters.

In 2003, Hammon had a breakout WNBA season. He was primarily used to scoring right off the bench for the Liberty. However, an anterior cruciate ligament injury forced her to end the season early. After the 2003 season, Hammon took Weatherspoon’s place as the Liberty’s primary point guard. Hammon signed on with the Colorado Chill in the NWBL in 2004, but she could only play in two matches because of her 2003 injury.

On August 16, 2005, Hammon scored 2,000 points in her WNBA career. She was later elected one of the team’s co-captains in 2004, along with Vickie Johnson and Crystal Robinson. At the end of the 2005 season, she was chosen for the All-WNBA Second Team. In January 2007, she participated in the Spanish League with Rivas Futura during her WNBA off-season.

On April 4, 2007, Hammon was traded to the San Antonio Silver Stars of the WNBA. When playing in San Antonio, Hammon picked up Big Shot Becky due to her tendency to make shots in essential situations. In the league that year, she had the most assists. Hammon recorded his most excellent averages of 18.8 points per game and 5.0 APG during the 2007 season.

In 2008, Hammon led the Silver Stars to a WNBA-best record of 24-10 and guided them into the playoffs for a second consecutive year while averaging 17.6 points per game and 4.9 assists per game. On June 2, 2017, Hammon underwent a job interview for the Milwaukee Bucks general manager post; however, she was not selected as a finalist. Gregg Popovich was sent off in the second quarter of the San Antonio Spurs 121-107 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers during Hammon’s sixth season with the team, and as a result, Hammon became the first female acting head coach in NBA history. The Las Vegas Aces hired Hammon as their head coach in December 2021, making her the first Russian head coach in WNBA history.
