In 1971, Bruce Arena transferred to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. His path crossed with Phyllis Spellman in the University, who he would later marry.
His wife, Phyllis, was keener on hockey at the University. It is strange how a star football player at the University and someone with different game fondness ultimately got hooked up and eventually tied the marital knot.
Bruce’s talent earned him All-American Honors for his lacrosse skills and All-Ivy League distinctions for soccer at Cornell. He was indeed a legend-in-making. Though he received an offer to play for the New York Cosmos, which was taking part in the North American Soccer League (NASL), with a contract salary of $4,000 per season, he did not oblige.
Instead, he chose academics over a football career. When he completed his graduate degree in business from Cornell in 1973, Bruce got a job as an assistant football coach at the same University.
A decade after they first crossed paths, Bruce and Phyllis gave birth to a son, Kenny Arena, on 1981 February 7. Their son Kenny is married to Jennifer Butler. The couple has given the parents a grandson, whose name is Wayde.
Kenny serves as Assistant Coach at FV Cincinnati, while Jennifer works in SHI International Corp. Their son and daughter-in-law live in Fairfax, Virginia.
The Arena family rears a dog of the golden retriever breed, which is lovingly named TJ. Phyllis uploads the doggie image on her Facebook wall often. The dog is a well-behaved, good-looking breed.
In 2009, Phyllis tripped while walking TJ and fell on her hip. The dog stayed with her even when the fall blacked her out and let go of the leash. She was on a crutch after that.
