According to two persons with knowledge of the situation, Hogg would succeed Sir Roger Carr, who was slated to depart BAE at its annual meeting in May of the following year.
The announcement was supposed to be made on Thursday, along with the half-year results for the FTSE 100 group.
As BAE Systems had expected, Cressida Hogg would be the first woman to head the board. The corporation has started a £1.5 billion share repurchase program and boosted its interim dividend.
The FTSE 100 group said on Thursday that Hogg, who now serves as chair at Landsec, will take over as chair designate in November.
