The BBC has announced that Amol Rajan will succeed Jeremy Paxman as host of University Challenge. Rajan, a British journalist, and broadcaster, has presented the Today program on BBC Radio 4 since 2021.

Amol has presented the Today program since 2021 and has served as the BBC’s Media Editor since December 2016. He was kept on for a while as “editor-at-large” after The Independent announced in February 2016 that it would terminate publishing a print version and would only operate online.

His wife, Charlotte, is an associate professor of social science at the UCL Social Research Institute in the UK. Her work focuses on parenting, gender, and reproduction which she approaches from sociological and anthropological viewpoints.

The brilliant lady is currently Mildred Blaxter’s post-doctoral fellow, doing her research with the Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness. She is carrying her post-doc at the University of Kent.

Amol and Charlotte have been married for nine years, and they have three children together. While the newest baby was born recently, the name of the other two children is Winston (son) and Jamaica (girl). The family lives in London. 

Rajan was born in Calcutta, India, to a Poona-born mother and a Combaconum-born Tamil father. While the initial name given to Rajan by his father was Varadarajan Amol, he altered his name to Amol Varadarajan, eventually adopting the surname Rajan.

The Indian-born journalist immigrated to England when he was three years old. He grew up in Tooting, South West London. Like his family, he was a Hindu until he was 15, after which he became an atheist.
