According to BBC News, the British man was sentenced to jail after he got caught with 12 stones and shards of broken pottery during a recent geology and archaeology tour of the country.

Initially, the Iraqi court decided to sentence the British national to 15 years in prison although the maximum penalty for this crime is the death penalty according to Iraqi law.
As per the sources, the Iraqi court reduced his sentence due to his old age. But, the latest media reports suggest that the 66-year-old geologist might be sentenced to death.
Mrs. Fitton had launched an appeal to the British government and foreign ministry to free her husband. She is determined to fight for the freedom of her husband.
