She came into the game of cricket relatively late and was not exceptionally knowledgeable about it. Kirby was given early opportunities to play for my representative cricket team based more on our same skill sets than on her previous cricket accomplishments or expertise.

Although Kirby has a very competitive attitude, there were numerous moments throughout her athletic career when she was disappointed because she was either not selected for teams or did not do as well as she had planned. This caused her to feel upset. However, her parents instilled in her the importance of looking further than the surface of those results.

Kirby Short Balancing Through Life

The fact that women’s cricket is getting closer and closer to being a thoroughly professional sport, according to Kirby, is a significant development.

She has high expectations that this upward trend will continue long into the foreseeable future. However, there are moments when she wonders what will be missing when there are no more players who can balance a profession outside of the game with one in the game.

Having two successful careers at the same time is a challenge for sure. A day that she experienced early in 2017 at MacGregor State High School in Brisbane, where Kirby had just begun her new job as Head of the Department for Health and Physical Education, may best illustrate the difficulty of juggling all of her responsibilities. The beginning of the academic year kicked off with a day off for students, which also happened to be a game day for the Heat.

The process of going from one dimension to the other is what Kirby has referred to as “switching minds.” She says that it is not always easy. That certainly qualified as one of the more challenging days for her!

Kirby said that juggling both of her responsibilities might be challenging at times; nonetheless, she views the beauty of her double existence as the fact that each of her positions enhances the other.

Kirby said that juggling both of her responsibilities might be challenging at times; nonetheless, she views the beauty of her double existence as the fact that each of her positions enhances the other. Her leadership at school is a beautiful compliment to her leadership on the cricket pitch. Her approach in any domain is to be an example for others and myself to follow and to have high standards for both.

In addition, Kirby is a firm believer that it is essential to cultivate great connections. She has discovered that it is necessary to get to know the students, staff, and players on a team individually to maximize the development and outputs of a group.

Knowing how to develop connections with individuals and build relationships amongst them is a beneficial skill for anybody participating on a team, whether a teaching team or a sports team. Because she works in both athletics and education, Kirby has gained knowledge and experience in this area.
