Leah’s mother did not accept their relationship and wanted it to end, but the couple was very happy together.
Nick and Leah had decided to go on a double date on June 28, 2000, and he dropped her off at her friend Cherie Mitchell’s house to prepare.
When McGuffin arrived around 9 p.m. to pick up Freeman, Mitchell informed him that Freeman had already left.
Freeman was last seen walking alone in downtown Coquille, near her high school.

McGuffin is an innocent man who has spent the last two decades fighting to clear his name.
Life after prison has been emotionally taxing for Nick, as even finding a job has proven difficult.
He was released in 2019 after a judge overturned his conviction on appeal, ruling that the Oregon State Police crime lab failed to reveal a trace amount of DNA evidence from an unknown man found on Freeman’s shoe.

Nick McGuffin maintains his innocence and claims the murderer is still on the run from the police.
Before Leah Freeman’s body was discovered outside her hometown of Coquille, Oregon, in 2000, her gym shoes, one of which was bloodied, were the only physical clues police had to figure out what had happened.
McGuffin is an innocent man who has spent the last twenty-one years fighting to clear his name.
Despite the erroneous conviction, McGuffin, now 38, is adamant about finding justice for his high school girlfriend.
McGuffin has struggled to rebuild his life since his release. McGuffin had difficulty finding work as a result of his conviction, but he enjoys spending time with his daughter.
Nick McGuffin now works as a chef in Portland.
