Liv was born in North Oaks, Minnesota where she spent the first ten years of her life. Afterwards, she relocated to McKinney with her family at the age of 10. Her family is American and both grew up in the state, and later they embraced the North Texas region.
According to her mother, Michelle Mitchell, most tennis players at her level, would not stay in the area. However, she stated that the local tennis community has had a positive impact on Hovde’s career.
When Hovde was around 11 or 12 years old, she began training with Phil Dent at his family’s tennis academy in Keller. Phil himself has previously reached No. 17 in the world and has won three singles titles. Dent made the finals of the 1974 Australian Open, losing to Jimmy Connors and Liv expresses much gratitude to have him as her trainer.
