Marc Fogel's Wife, Jane Fogel Appeal For Help As A Teacher Arrested In Russia

The family of an Oakmont resident who was given a protracted prison term in Russia pleads with US authorities to free their family member, Marc Fogel.

Fogel's family thinks the US government should try its hardest to assist. In the family, there are Mark Fogel's niece, Sarah Jane Grubbs, and his wife, Jane Fogel. Like every family member, Jane appeals to the nation's government to have her husband returned to his home.

Grubbs just wants her uncle to come home to Oakmont. The other niece of Mark and Jane, Ellen Keelan, thinks he won't be able to survive because of his age and health. According to Grubbs and Keelan, the family has not heard from or seen him in 348 days.

The criminal defense attorney, Sasha Philips, claimed that although Marc Fogel's Russian legal representative filed an appeal and will present it to the court soon, they have no grounds to believe that it will reduce his sentence because they consider it politically motivated.

The family said they occasionally correspond via translated, censored letters that frequently lose context.

What Are The Charges Of Marc Fogel? Is He Getting Out?

For their tenth and final year of teaching in Russia, Fogel and his wife Jane took a flight back on August 14, 2021, but Marc Fogel was stopped at the Moscow airport.

According to his family, Fogel carried 17 grams of cannabis to treat his chronic back pain. He was there found guilty of drug possession and trafficking last month. He received a 14-year sentence in a Russian high-security prison colony.

Grubbs said, "We pray every day he'll come home to us." Similarly, the other niece, Keelan, gave a statement, "I want people to understand that this is a death sentence for my uncle. He is 61, he already has these health issues, and we’re talking about a maximum-security prison in Russia. We’re distraught, we’re beside ourselves. . We did not see this coming. The only explanation is that this is political,”

Grubbs added, “We want to do anything we can to raise awareness and implore our government to do what they can, legally can do, to please bring him home to us."

Marc Fogel: Wikipedia, And Age

Mark Fogel is 61 years old. Marc grew up in Butler. He loves traveling and is passionate about teaching children all over the globe.

In her statement, Keelan said, "That’s what would kick off including him in negotiations, swaps, and stuff. His life is just as valuable as anyone’s, and he’s worth saving,”

According to Keelan, the family pleads with the Biden administration to declare Fogel unlawfully detained, which would launch official diplomatic efforts to secure his release.

Marc Fogel's criminal defense attorney at the Khimkinsy Court of the Moscow Region, Sasha Phillips, gave his word implying that the designation of "wrongfully detained" would commit more US government resources to secure his release and transfer his case to the US government jurisdiction.

Phillips further added in his statement, “Marc fully cooperated with the investigation and prosecution; submitted substantial proof of prior medical treatment, of debilitating health conditions, and of his doctor’s recommendation for medical marijuana.”

“This sentence is grossly disproportionate to sentences imposed by Russian courts in similar cases involving similar amounts of marijuana and even exceeds sentences imposed by Russian courts on major drug traffickers and murderers,” she said.
