Following a party at his house when he was 17, Matthew Barnett, now 28 and convicted of child endangerment, spent four months in jail for abandoning Coleman, then 14 and paralyzed, on her mother’s porch in the frigid cold.

He was accused of criminal assault despite having been found guilty of a second-degree misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child. A four-month prison sentence was imposed on him, but it was suspended in favor of a two-year probationary period.

Barnett’s mother informed the media that as a result, her son had struggled with serious mental health problems while at college. But he appears to have completely distanced himself from the public since then.
