Bird was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary for Higher Education and Skills on 2 March 2012, then in a reshuffle of the Second Gillard Ministry on March 25, 2013, he was promoted to Minister for Higher Education and Skills.
In the Second Rudd Ministry, Bird was appointed Minister for Regional Development, Minister for Regional Communications, and Minister for Road Safety in July 2013.
Bird is a proponent of same-sex marriage, having voted in favor of it three times.
