Toulon has revealed that Cheslin Kolbe has experienced yet another setback in his injury recovery after being out for several weeks. The Springbok player had successful surgery on Wednesday after breaking his jaw against Benetton last weekend.

This weekend’s game between Toulon and Toulouse, his old employers, will now be missed by him. Kolbe lost to Pieter-Steph du Toit, a colleague from South Africa, in the World Rugby Player of the Year competition in 2019. 

He had previously played for Western Province in the Currie Cup, the Stormers in super rugby, and Toulouse in the Top14. With the Boks, he won the World Cup, the Rugby Championship, and the Lions Series.

What Happened To Cheslin Kolbe During A Game?

Toulon was handed a crushing blow with the news that South African wing Cheslin Kolbe would be out for a few weeks with a broken jaw. The World Cup winner, 28, was hurt last Saturday during a European Challenge Cup game against Benetton.

Kolbe had a successful procedure on Wednesday, although the club stated that he would be “kept out of play for several weeks.” Kolbe will be absent from the encounter against Toulouse on Saturday, which has been shifted to the 60 000-seat Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

Additionally, he will watch as Toulon competes for one of the Top 14’s top six play-off spots. They are presently ninth with 51 points and five more than Racing.

After Toulouse, the remaining Top 14 games for the regular season are against Bordeaux-Begles, Pau, and Racing. On May 8, Toulon will also play London Irish in the Challenge Cup quarterfinal. This is yet another setback for Kolbe, who was forced to hold off on making his Toulon debut until late December of last year after suffering a calf injury while working out with the Springboks in September.

Kolbe missed the remaining four Rugby Championship games for the Boks due to that injury and the end-of-year internationals.

Kolbe, 28, may only play a minor role in the Rugby Championship, which begins in three weeks if the worst diagnosis of a probably broken jaw is confirmed. Kolbe exited the field in the first half.

With just two backline substitutions on Saturday, the Springboks grind out a series win over the Welsh thanks to their 30-14 victory at Cape Town Stadium, replacing Kolbe with Willie le Roux.

On Saturday, August 6, the Springboks and All Blacks will square off at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit to start the 2022 Rugby Championship. The two teams will meet again at Ellis Park in Johannesburg a week later.

Before selecting their Rugby Championship lineup, the Springbok management team will also confirm the availability of seasoned No. 8 Duane Vermeulen and scrumhalf Cobus Reinach.

Cheslin Kobe’s Wife Worried After He Broke His Jaw

Cheslin Kolbe’s spouse is Layla Cupido. The couple wed in January 2018 on a significant Stellenbosch property. Currently living in France, they left South Africa when Cheslin signed with Toulouse and is concerned about his broken jaw.
