At the United States, Olympic track and field trials in Eugene, Oregon, Lomong qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics in the 1500 meters. During the 2008 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony, he was the flag bearer for the United States.
He is presently a part of Team Darfur, a group of athletes encouraging China to put pressure on Sudan’s government to resolve the Darfur conflict.

Athlete Lopez Lomong was born in Lopepe Lomong in Kimotong, which is an ethnic Buya village in Budi County, Namorunyang State, South Sudan.
Like all the other lost boys, Lopez also came to the United States of America without any paperwork that is why his official birthday is listed as January 1.

The athlete is also one of the victims of the Second Sudanese Civil War as he was taken away while attending Catholic Mass when he was six years old, and his family assumed he was dead and buried him in his absence.
He was nearly killed in captivity, but others from his town assisted him in escaping along with his three other friends. All four of them ran for three days before crossing the Kenyan border.
Lomong spent ten years in the Kakuma refugee camp in Turkana County, northern Kenya, before being relocated to the United States through Toomey Residential and Community Services’ Unaccompanied Refugee Minor program.

He was born to his father Awei Lomong and his mother Rita Namana. His family is from the Buya ethnic group, who speak the Laarim language in southern South Sudan. Likewise, the player also has two younger brothers, Alex, and Peter.

After witnessing Michael Johnson compete in the 2000 Summer Olympics on television, he was encouraged to pursue a career as a runner.
Lomong enrolled at Tully High School in Tully, New York, in the 10th grade. He helped his high school cross country and track teams win sectional and state championships, and after a brief stint at Norfolk State University, he went on to race at Northern Arizona University.
On July 6, 2007, he became a legal citizen of the United States.
