On March 1, the Bears broke the impasse in the contract talks they had been having with Smith and signed him to a new four-year deal for $22 million.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

On Monday, January 7, 2014, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced they had hired Smith as the team’s 10th head coach in the franchise’s history.

Before accepting the position with the Buccaneers, Smith went through the interview process for the vacant positions of head coach with the Houston Texans and the Detroit Lions.

Smith was let go by the Buccaneers on January 6, 2016, after leading the team to an overall record of 8–24 over his two seasons as head coach, including a record of 6–10 in the 2015 season.

The University of Illinois 

Smith was offered the position of head coach at the University of Illinois on March 7, 2016, which he accepted. In exchange, he agreed to a contract that would pay him $21 million over six years.

During the meeting that took place in September 2016, the Board of Trustees of the university gave its approval to Smith’s contract. As part of that approval, $2 million of Smith’s income was shifted from the last two years of the contract and made due in earlier years.

In addition, the contract allowed for performance bonuses of up to $8 million, depending on how well the work was done.

Houston Texas 

Smith had not worked in the National Football League (NFL) since 2015 when he was the Tampa Bay Buccaneer’s head coach.

On March 10, 2021, the Houston Texans hired Smith to serve as their associate head coach and defensive coordinator under the direction of head coach David Culley. This marked Smith’s return to the NFL for the first time since 2015.

On February 7, 2022, he was promoted to head coach.
