Ainias Smith Arrested On Gun And Drug Charges, Is Texas A&M Wide Receiver On Brazos County Jail?

According to the Brazos County judicial website, Texas A&M receiver, Ananias Smith was detained by A&M police early on Wednesday morning on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, illegal weapon carrying and marijuana possession.

Smith, an Aggie’s team captain, and rising senior were anticipated to attend SEC Media Days in Atlanta alongside coach Jimbo Fisher, offensive tackle Layden Robinson, and safety Demani Richardson.

There has been no mention of whether Smith will participate in the event or be replaced by another player.

Ainias Smith Arrested On Gun & Drug Charges

According to the Brazos County judicial website, accessed through the Houston Chronicle, Texas A&M receiver, Ainias Smith was detained by university police on Wednesday on suspicion of DUI, 

He is the Aggies’ top returning receiver in 2022. He finished second on the Aggies with 509 yards behind tight end Jalen Wydermyer, who was signed by the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent in May. Last season, he led the team with 47 receptions and six touchdowns.

Smith has started all three years for Texas A&M as a highly anticipated slot receiver out of Sugar Land in the Greater Houston region.

His primary position as a freshman was the slot, but due to a lack of depth at the position, he expanded his role to running back in the Aggies’ Texas Bowl victory over Oklahoma State.

Is Ainias Smith In Brazos County Jail?

After being transferred to the Brazos County Jail for the DWI arrest, an officer examined Smith there, and reportedly denied owning the weapon or the marijuana. The probable cause statement claims that a passenger who was later released also denied possessing either the pistol or marijuana.

According to Brazos County, Smith, who was supposed to be one of three players to attend SEC Media Days in Atlanta on Thursday, has still not been freed on bond as of Wednesday morning.

Along with Jimbo Fisher, Demani Richardson, and Layden Robinson from A&M and the final of the College Football Hall of Fame’s media day on Thursday, Smith was scheduled to attend. No one from A&M could be reached for comment.

Smith, a senior from Dulles High School 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 185 pounds, has more than 1,300 receiving yards over the previous three seasons and has served as the Aggies’ Mr. Everything in receiving, running, and special teams.

Where Is Texas A&M Wide Receiver Ainias Smith Now?

Ainias Smith will not play in any upcoming games because he is currently incarcerated for criminal conduct, and no verdict from his arrest has been made public. Smith, a team captain who was one of three players scheduled to attend SEC Media Days in Atlanta on Thursday, has still not been given bail.

Smith split his time between running back and slot receiver as a sophomore, racking up 293 rushing yards from 49 carries and 564 receiving yards from 43 catches. They were combined for a total of 10 touchdowns.

The previous year, Smith continued to play receiver and finished with 47 receptions for 509 yards and a team-high six touchdowns. Smith has also benefited the special teams; he returned a punt for a 95-yard gain last year.
