Inside Greg Gumbel and Partner Marcy Gumbel Married Life

Greg is a married man who has been so for almost half a century. He married his then-girlfriend Marcella Kaszynski in 1973 after dating for a couple of years. She has become an internal part of Greg’s lifestyle and has played an essential role in constructing a successful career that the famous sportscaster enjoys today.

Marcella is popularly known as Marcy Gumbel. She was born on April 3, 1949, in the USA. She has kept herself isolated from the media or the press so that her matters would be far away from the reach of the public eye. For that reason, her current status is unknown to us. However, she used to be a business consultant for a private corporate company in the past. Still, it seems like she has drifted away from her professional life and is enjoying her days with her family members.

The couple is blessed with a daughter named Michelle Gumbel, their only child. She was born four years before her parent’s marriage in 1969. She turned 51 this year and is already married and living happily with her husband and kids. Michelle is not interested in sports and is seen occasionally with her father during particular NFL games and shows. Like her mother, she also hates public attention and has isolated herself away from media attention.

The Gumbel brothers are big names when it comes to sportscasting and hosting. They can be considered the pioneer of modern sports commentary in the NFL. The brothers are initially from New Orleans and have spent most of their childhood there. They were raised with three other siblings by their parents, Richard Gumbel and Rhea Alice LeCesne.

Bryant is the part of the broadcasting scene since the early 1970s. He gained fame most during his 15 years as a co-host of Today on NBC. He has been hosting the popular HBO investigative series Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel since 1995. The Los Angeles Times named this show the most refined sports program on television.

Their father was a judge, while their mother was the city clerk. They were well educated since childhood as their parents believed in education and sent all their children to school. They have German ties in their ancestry as their great-great-grandfather was a German-Jewish emigrant from the village of Albisheim. Their family moved permanently from New Orleans to Chicago, where the Gumbel brothers received their high school education. They were raised Catholic and educated at De La Salle Institute in Chicago.

Surprisingly, the younger brother started his broadcasting career in 1971, earlier than his older brother. He later informed Greg about a vacancy at NBC, and the brothers became the pioneers of sportscasting in the NFL. Greg earned a B.A. in English from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he also participated in baseball before becoming a broadcaster. At the same time, Bryant earned a degree in Russian history from Bates College in 1970. Before becoming a full-time commentator and sportscaster, Greg used to sell hospital supplies in Detroit.

The sportscaster began his career in 1973 and is well recognized for his coverage of the NFL and NCAA coverage. He called the play-by-play of the Super Bowl XXXV for the CBS network in 2001, becoming the first African-American broadcaster to do so in the country. Currently, Gumbel serves as the studio host for CBS’ coverage of men’s college basketball and the play-by-play announcer for the NFL on the network.

He is the guy who made watching the NFL interesting for the spectators at home with his entertaining and excellent skill of commentary during live sports. During his initial days, he loved sports and wanted to become something in the sports department but was constantly failing to do so. However, his luck was going to be changed in 1973 as he got his first chance to live his dream and join the world of sports broadcasting. Before that, he made a respectable income by selling medical supplies in Detroit.

He came into this line via his younger brother, who informed him of a vacancy as a sports announcer at an NBC-owned and operated station, WMAQ-TV, in Chicago. He didn’t think twice, gave his 100% for the job, and was selected. This was just the beginning for him; later, he became a well-known sportscaster in NFL.

Greg has liked sports since his childhood. He also played baseball in college but couldn’t continue playing the game due to personal reasons. His entry into the sportscasting world was made possible by his brother Bryant who informed him about the vacancy at NBC.

The Beginning 

In 1973, Chicago’s WMAQ-TV, a station owned and run by NBC, was holding an audition for a sports commentator. Greg applied for the post, and eventually, he was hired. At that time, he was residing in Detroit because of his previous work. He moved back to Chicago and spent seven years at WMAQ-TV. He did well in the company, and because of his capabilities, he was already getting offers from various broadcasting stations across the country. After his successful seven years at WMAQ-TV, he joined the CBS network for more challenges.

CBS Journey 

Gumbel started his CBS career in 1988 by working part-time as an NFL announcer. Gumbel also started calling college basketball in 1989. From 1990 through 1993, he served as The NFL Today’s host. Additionally, he served as the host of CBS’ coverage of Major League Baseball, college football, and, in 1999, the Daytona 500.

Before becoming well-known at CBS, Gumbel worked for MSG, ESPN, and WFAN radio in New York City. He called the early NBA games and served as the host of SportsCenter on ESPN. When MSG inked a substantial agreement to broadcast New York Yankees games in 1989, Gumbel presented the pregame and postgame shows. In addition to his duties at MSG, he hosted the first radio morning show on the radio station WFAN.

NBC Career 

Gumbel switched to NBC in 1994 after CBS lost the rights to broadcast the NFL and Major League Baseball. Gumbel oversaw NBC’s coverage of the 1994 Major League Baseball All-Star Game while he was employed there. In addition, he provided play-by-play for the 1995 Major League Baseball, The NBA on NBC, the 1996 Summer Olympics’ daytime coverage from Atlanta, Georgia, the 1995 World Championships of Figure Skating, and the studio host for The NFL on NBC.

Return To CBS

Gumbel returned to CBS after Super Bowl ‘XXXII’ was televised on NBC. His first significant task was hosting the network’s college basketball coverage, including the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, from the network’s studio. Gumbel joined the broadcast crew as the lead announcer, with fellow NBC alumnus Phil Simms serving as his color man as CBS had just purchased the rights to NBC’s previous NFL package.

Between 1998 through 2003, Gumbel served as the NFL’s top CBS broadcaster, calling Super Bowls ‘XXXV’ and ‘XXXVIII.’ James Brown took Gumbel’s place as studio host of The NFL Today after the 2005 NFL season. Since then, he has been a regular man of choice for different sports activities broadcasted by the CBS network. Gumbel is the third person to host and announce a Super Bowl. In addition to hosting Super Bowls ‘XXVI’, ‘XXX,’ and ‘XXXII,’ he called Super Bowls ‘XXXV’ and ‘XXXVIII.’
