Dalziel has had two husbands so far. In 1988, she married Mike Pannell. The couple split in 1995, citing the stress of parliamentary life as a major factor in their choice.
Dalziel married Christchurch lawyer Rob Davidson in 2000. He died of prostate cancer in August 2020, at the age of 69. Dalziel was born in Christchurch in 1960 and attended Canterbury University.
She received her legal degree and was admitted to the Bar. Before becoming the union’s secretary, she was the Canterbury Hotel and Hospital Workers’ Union’s legal officer.
She was also a member of national organizations such as the Federation of Labour and the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions.
