Kiera was invited to Astronomy Night by the White House, not because of her science project, but because of what she referred to as “The arrest, as well as all the difficulties. I am a young black woman who got expelled from school.”

Kiera Wilmot, a Bartow High School student, was arrested for a failed experiment. She made a water bottle out of household chemicals and aluminum foil. It resulted in a tiny explosion, but no one was injured, and no property was harmed as a result.

Wilmot claims she was handcuffed and taken to a juvenile detention center after being dragged from a classroom and accused of possessing and deploying a dangerous device. Officials at the school highlighted a “zero tolerance” policy aimed at ensuring the safety of all kids.

The allegations against Kiera were later dropped, and she was permitted to return to Bartow.

The name of Kiera Wilmot’s parents is Marie Wilmot. Kiera’s father’s name is not disclosed to the public. She has a twin sister named Kayla Wilmot. 

She was punished, expelled, and moved to an alternate school, where she “felt like a criminal,” according to her. She and her twin sister Kayla, who stayed at Bartow High, said they were subjected to taunting from classmates that made them cry.

She had to tick a box on her college application stating that she had been arrested on criminal charges. She was accepted to Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland, where she studies mechanical engineering, after considerable explanation.
