Matteo Berrettini Parents, The Untold Truth On Claudia Bigo and Luca Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini was born on April 12, 1996, in Rome, Italy. He is the eldest son of Claudia Bigo and Luca Berrettini.

Berrettini’s parents are well-aware of their son’s achievement at a very young age. They both played tennis in past, which has been a source of inspiration for the young tennis star.

It was Claudia and Luca who first exposed Matteo to sports. They occasionally travel to watch their son compete, as evidenced by their presence in his box at the US Open in 2019.

Unlike the majority of ranked players, Matteo was a late bloomer. He began competing in Grand Slam events as a teenager. When Nadal turned 19, he was rated second in the world, while Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer each won their first Slams at age 21. On the other hand, Berrettini was considering tennis scholarships for college.

As quoted in GQ, Matteo has said: “I finished high school, and my parents were asking me, ‘Do you want to go to college in the US? Do you want to start college here in Italy?’ And I said, ‘Guys, give me a couple of years, and let’s see where I can get to. If I don’t reach the level I want to reach, then I’m going to do something else,’”

Matteo Berrettini’s dad, Luca Berrettini is a retired tennis player. He represented Italy until 2015 and has competed in many tournaments.

In an interview, Matteo’s dad spoke about how he and his wife Claudia managed to make their son, Matteo an athlete. He stated

Luca said: “We never forced him. Matteo gave up tennis for two years, at the time he was playing judo and swimming too, and his brother convinced him to take the racket on his hand again.”

Matteo Berrettini’s mom, Claudia Bigo was a club tennis player as well. She has always guided her son in a positive way.

In an interview, Claudia said:  “Matteo was very sensitive, careful, close with his brother. With his eyes, he was looking at everything, both at school and in tennis.”

She also added that Matteo already looked like a teenager at the age of eight. She was pretty much impressed by her son’s mentality.

Matteo added: “At 18 years he broke his knee and then he had similar problems again, this year on the ankle. But every time he re-starts feeling more excited.”

While in an interview, Claudia Bigo has also spoken of her son’s relationship with Australian player Alja Tomljanovic. She was very happy about them, but the two have already split in June 2022.

Matteo Berrettini is Italian but has a mixed background in his family. His paternal lineage is from Florence.

While his maternal ancestry hails from South America. His grandmother, Lucia Fogaca, is a Brazilian from Rio de Janeiro. 

Berrettini has a younger brother, Jacopo, born on November 27, 1998. He is also a professional tennis player. Matteo has been training with his brother Jacopo since the age of eight.
