The coach was named head coach of the Oregon State Beavers softball team before the 1995 season. He guided the Beavers to a 47–25 record in 1999, setting a program record for wins and advancing to NCAA Tournament for the first time.

The coach guided the Beavers to their first-ever conference championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2005, with a 43–16 record. Oregon State’s women’s sports program won the Pac-10 regular-season championship for the first time.
He was selected Pac-10 Coach of the Year at the end of the regular season. In a victory over Minnesota on March 1, 2009, Walker achieved his 500th career win.
