Why Was Tutwiler Dorm Alabama Demolished? Twitter Rages Over A Video

Tutwiler Hall has imploded at the University of Alabama. The thirteen-story dorm has housed more than half a million women since 1968.

In June 2022, it was announced that the building will be demolished. The UA News Center website has also live-streamed the implosion.

Tutwiler Dorm Demolished On Fourth Of July

The infamous Tutwiler Dorm has been demolished on the Fourth Of July. It was taken down today in the Morning morning at 7 am.

The hall has been the residence of more than 50,000 women for almost five decades. It was located on Paul W Bryant Drive and was among the most eye-grabbing building at the location. Thus, some specific areas were closed until further notice. 

According to the UA, around 500 pounds of dynamites were strategically implanted to bring it down. Similarly, drones were used to keep an eye on the incident and the crews. It took only around 20 seconds for the total destruction. 

All 13 floors fell inward to a fragmented pile of rubble. There were smokes all over the area obscuring the view.

The D.H. Griffin Wrecking Company and Dykon Explosive Demolition Corporation were assigned for the demolition job.

Why Was Tutwiler Dorm Alabama Demolished? 

The Tutwiler Dorm at the University of Alabama was taken down to make way for a new residence hall.

The new dormitory will be opened in August 2022. It was announced on June 21, 2022.

The new facility will house 1200 plus students. It will include cutting-edge furnishings and amenities, as well as a hybrid community-apartment style layout with double-capacity bedrooms. In addition, it will feature public community spaces with TVs and whiteboards, outdoor social spaces, laundry rooms, and more.

Previously, the old building skipped elevators from 12 to 14 due to superstitions. Also, the bed capacity was only up to a thousand. 

Nonetheless, some people were ecstatic about the announcement, while others were disappointed.

Twitter Rages Over The Tutwiler Dorm Video

The demolition video of Tutwiler Drom destruction video was shared live on the UA News Center website. Within minutes, Twitter was flooded with people sharing the video and voicing their opinions. Especially those, who have memories at the dorm. 

Mike Dubberly, the anchor of GDA has tweeted: “A look at the implosion of the old #Tutwiler dorm at The University of Alabama.  I‘m sure there are a ton of memories for those who lived in that residence hall at The Capstone since it opened in 1968.”

@tashaaaaaaa has tweeted: ” RIP Tutwiler. I breathed in this dust while running, so I imagine I have now filled with forever chemicals and heartbreak and o chem notes.”

Similarly, a crew member @GeesTweets says: “Cool! The worst job of my life involved Tutwiler.  Hot 100° day in the summer of the late ’80s,  I was paid to help swap out all the mattresses.  Old mattresses smelled so bad we quit stacking in elevators and just started tossing out an open window to pick up below.  Good times.”
