A devastating incident that took place on October 30, 1975, had left the entire state of Connecticut feeling eerie as the news of the murder of a 15-year-old Martha Moxley attracted the attention of the media and powerful authorities. The alleged convict Michael Skakel was still facing trial for the murder in 2018 until his case was finally dropped. So, what happened to Martha Moxley?
Martha Moxley, a 15-year-old in the year 1975, was found brutally murdered and left under a tree in her family’s backyard. She was last seen with her neighbor, 17-year-old Thomas Skakel, who was initially the prime suspect in the case.
However, further investigations on the matter later unveiled that another Skakel brother, Michael Skakel, also 15-year-old then, had been tampering with the truth for quite some time.
Michael, who belonged to the family of Kennedys, was confident that his name would be cleared as his family name has a big reputation and held powerful authority.
After a series of events unraveled, Michael was arrested under a warrant issued for an unnamed juvenile on January 09, 2000. In March later that year, he was tried in the juvenile court, where the judge decided that he would be tried as an adult.
Where is Tommy Skakel Today?
Tommy, Thomas Skakel, was one of the seven children of Rushton Skakel and Anne Reynolds, who was considered a prime suspect in the murder of Martha Moxley, a 15-year-old neighbor of the Skakels in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Tommy was the last person Martha was seen with before her gruesome murder. Tommy, then 17, had admitted to having some sort of sexual involvement with Martha when they were seen “falling together behind the fence” after Martha started flirting with him.
It was only when a new suspect, Tommy’s brother Michael was brought in to highlight that his name was cleared from the murder.
Tommy Skakel has been freed from the case and now leads a very different life in comparison to his brother Michael.
He was married in 1989 and currently lives with his family in Lenox, Massachusetts.
Is the Convict of Martha Moxley’s Murder, Michael Skakel Still in Prison?
After the case of murder heated, Skakel’s father Rushton hired The Sutton Associates in 1991 in an attempt to clear his son’s name from the murder accusations.
On the contrary, the investigation led by The Sutton Associates revealed that both Thomas and Michael altered their stories about their activities the night of the murder.
Several investigations followed one after another. There was also some fiction published that closely resembled Martha Moxley’s case, which somehow pointed fingers at Michael and not Tommy Skakel.
Skakel was convicted guilty of killing Moxley on June 7, 2002, and was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.
Following a series of challenges, Michael was given a second trial in 2013 when a court found that his trial attorney was ineffective. The conviction was restored in 2016, but in May 2018, the Connecticut Supreme Court reversed it.
Finally, the prosecution said in October 2020 that Michael would not be prosecuted again for the murder because it would be impossible to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Michael was released after more than a decade in prison.

What happened to Tommy Skakel?
Although Tommy Skakel was initially the prime suspect for the murder of Martha Moxley, his name was later cleared from the case when his brother Michael Skakel was convicted of the crime.
The suspicions were raised when Tommy falsified his statement, saying he was busy with his schoolwork that did not exist the night Martha was murdered.
However, despite constant changes in his alibi, Tommy was proven not guilty after the clues were all directed at his brother Michael.

Was Tommy Skakel Arrested?
Tommy Skakel was not arrested as he were not enough evidence to prove that he was guilty of the murder.
Since he was the last person seen with Martha Moxley, it created a huge uproar in the murder case.
However, he admitted that he had some sort of fling with Martha before she was murdered on the night of Halloween in 1975, but his name was cleared, and he was free from the case that later revolved around his brother Michael Skakel.
