Patrick Lyoya, a Congolese immigrant who had lived in Grand Rapids for nearly five years, was fatally shot in the head by a GRPD (Grand Rapids Police Department) on April 4, 2022, in the United States.
On Wednesday (April 13), the city’s new police chief, Eric Winstrom, revealed four recordings, including footage of the shooting captured by a passenger in Lyoya’s car.
According to WOOD, investigators gave the footage to Lyoya’s family before exposing it to the public. Lyoya’s family & civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump came to Grand Rapids to talk about the sad shooting video.

Patrick Lyoya is the son of Peter Lyoya and Dorcas Lyoya. Patrick’s parents lost their son when he was just 26 years old.
Patrick’s parents moved to the US eight years ago to flee violence in their native country, “the Democratic Republic of Congo.” Patrick, their firstborn, was fatally shot by a police officer during a traffic check earlier this month, shattering that belief.
Patrick was shot by an unnamed “Grand Rapids Police Department” officer after a traffic encounter earlier this month, April. He was shot in the back of the head while lying face down on the ground after the two men fought over the officer’s stun gun. On April 13, the videotape was made public.
After a newly released footage showing the 26-year-old Black man has fatally shot by a police officer during a traffic stop, Patrick Lyoya’s father, Peter, stated his son was “slaughtered like an animal.” In 2014, the family left the Democratic Republic of Congo for the United States for a better life.

Patrick, 26, was tragically shot in his head by a Michigan police officer during a traffic stop in Grand Rapids earlier this month. The video shows a brief foot chase & a fight over the white cop’s Taser before the white officer shoots Patrick Lyoya in the head while the Black guy is face down on the ground.
Now the family seeks charges in Patrick’s death. According to the Lyoya family’s lawyers, the officer should be punished and dismissed.
Not only that, but the Lyoyas also demanded that the officer’s name be made public. Patrick’s siblings & sisters want to know who killed him & see his photo so they can be sure “this is the guy who snatched Patrick.
