Atlanta: Who is Wesley Freeman, 60? Alpharetta Building Manager Shooting

A shooting occurred inside a Midtown condo building, killing two people and injuring a third.

The Atlanta Police Department has released the identities of the victims killed in the incident. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has verified to Channel 2’s Larry Spruill that the victims’ identities are confirmed. The victims are Michael Shinners, 60, of Alpharetta, and Wesley Freeman, 41, of Atlanta. Both men were found dead as a result of their injuries. Just after 4 p.m., the APD took into custody the lady suspected of shooting Shinners, Freeman, and a third victim currently being treated at a nearby hospital.

At around 1:45 p.m., police dispatched to the condos located at 1280 West Peachtree Street in response to a complaint of gunfire in the area. Spruill rushed to the building, where the police reported finding two victims who were shot. These individuals have now been identified as Shinners and Freeman.

Freeman was taken to the hospital but did not survive his injuries and later passed away. Afterward, the police were summoned to 1100 Peachtree Street, where they discovered another victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Spruill was told by neighbors who reside in the building that the gunman was a woman, and the police subsequently validated this information. As the police searched for the person who opened fire, they placed a large portion of Midtown under lockdown. They instructed residents in the surrounding area to remain home and keep off the streets.

Candace McCowan, who works for Channel 2, headed to Colony Square. There she saw police and SWAT officers scouring the buildings and stores for the gunman after a witness told her they spotted the suspect walking in that area. At about 4:15 p.m., the police informed McCowan that they had given the all-clear for Colony Square. Seconds later, they verified that the police had taken the gunman into custody.

Channel 2 Action News viewer uploaded a photo on social media that purports to show the suspect in the shooting being taken into custody at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The police have stated that they are still looking into what led to the incident.
On Monday, the Anchorage Police Department (APD) issued a statement in which they expressed their appreciation for the support provided by its public safety partners in dealing with this situation.

They expressed gratitude to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, the Fulton County Marshals Office, the MARTA Police Department, the Georgia State University Police Department, the Georgia Tech Police Department, the ATF, and the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, and Grady EMS. The Atlanta Police Department also stated that they could find the suspect at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport and securely take her into custody with the assistance of public safety partners and the extensive surveillance network.
